Life on the road

Things to bring when you’re moving month to month

Sooo… I used to sort of be a hoarder. Living the nomad life has forced me to be better about this, but I still probably hold on to way more than I need. But hey, that’s who I am. This tendency of course also impacted the amount of things I wanted to bring with me with every move. With that said, please don’t judge me for alllll of the personal items I packed into our car every single month. Hopefully, some of you out there are like me and understand the need to bring several items to help you feel at home – ha!

Being organized is key to moving around so much. There are a few items we bought that have made this MUCH easier on us.

Scout storage containers — they are a little pricey but so worth it. They can fit so much plus fold up when not in use. We have three and used them for the following:

Scout Storage Container
  • Kitchen “gadgets” (vegetable peeler, avocado slicer, wine opener and corker)
  • Handwritten cookbook from our moms
  • 1 coffee mug each
  • Ninja blender
  • 2 acrylic cutting boards
  • Coozies + brewmate
  • Tupperware
  • Both of our toiletries + medications
  • Makeup + hair tools
  • Scale
  • Jewelry organizer (got this one on Amazon and absolutely love it)
  • Sunscreen
  • Hair towel + shower cap
  • Google Home
  • Electronics (extension cord and power strip, chargers, Roku) *so far, all of our AirBnB’s have had Smart TVs so we haven’t needed the Roku Stick
  • Games (we love Yahtzee, Sequence, and cards)
  • Calendar
  • Magnetic “weekly meals” calendar
  • 2 small picture frames to make every place feel more like ours

Plastic bins for food — we brought a large one for all the baking/cooking supplies like flour, vinegars, etc. and one smaller one for our spices. Tip: use ziplock bags and smaller containers whenever possible to save space!

Cooler & ice packs — we have this smaller Rtic cooler which is the perfect size, although sometimes we have to throw away some of our condiments and refrigerated items because we can’t fit them all!

My daily supplies — work laptop, computer monitor, keyboard, mouse, cords, desk chair, weights, yoga mat, journal

Clothes — this is where it gets hard for me! Especially travelling to places with variable weather. My best advice is to learn the KonMari fold technique, and be ok with wearing the same thing over and over again. My strategy is to have a lot of neutral clothing so I can switch it up with accessories!

  • One carry-on suitcase each
  • One large airtight plastic bag each — this is tricky if your AirBnB doesn’t have a vacuum, but we’ve gone to a car wash with free vacuums before…
Airtight bags

Believe it or not, all of this (barely) fits into my Honda Accord! It takes some strategic packing and arranging, but it can be done if you set your mind to it. And honestly, I’ve learned that we can make do with very little. Sometimes I wish we had a random item, but we have everything we need and can always go to the store if the going gets tough!
